Spyderco has long been considered a leader in the use of exotic, high performance steels for knives. After years of using the best materials the leading steel manufacturers could provide, the company decided to create its own alloy. In collaboration with Crucible® Industries, it developed its own CPM SPY27 stainless steel, where SPY refers to Spyderco and 27 is the atomic number of cobalt (Co).
CPM SPY27 - a proprietary blend of alloys including vanadium, molybdenum, niobium, nitrogen and cobalt. It contains 1.4% carbon and 1% niobium (Nb), one of the best carbides, which contributes to the wear resistance of the steel. This makes the steel very long lasting and guarantees aggressive cuts for a long time. Easy to sharpen, corrosion resistant and contains 14% chromium. It provides good strength and edge retention as well as a fine grain structure. This unique steel is produced at Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) mills.
Ball Bearing-Lock, one of the strongest blade locking mechanisms. Hardened ball bearing placed in a black polymer basket in open position pressed against the blade by a spring. Made in USA.
Blade - with Leaf-Shaped profile, thickness 3.2 mm. Blade is covered with a non-reflective matte Stone Washed coating (masking minor scratches caused by use). Plain blade has a Full Flat Grind. The flat grind provides excellent cutting edge geometry with a sharp tip. The enlarged 14 mm SpyderHole (Spyderco patent) allows opening the knife even with a glove. Distinctive Finger Choil - arched undercut for index finger and notched ramp for thumb on back of blade increases control of knife.
Handle - Mineral Blue color. Made of lightweight FRCP plastic, has a bi-directional texture (Bi-Directional Texturing) providing excellent grip in all conditions (even with greasy, wet hands). Folder is equipped with a screw-on molded wire clip (left/right) that allows you to carry the knife in tip-up position. Spine Jimping notches on the back of the handle increase comfort and grip. In the back of the handle an enlarged hole (lanyard hole) for pulling a lanyard or safety line.
