Curtis Iovito, co-founder and co-owner of Spartan Blades, spent his youth hunting and camping along the Dupage River in Illinois. After leaving his job as a nuclear security guard in the United States Marine Corps, he re-enlisted in the US Army. As a member of the United States Army Rangers, he took part in the airborne landing at Rio Hato during Operation “Just Cause” in Panama. Later in his service, as an armament sergeant in the Special Forces, he specialized in irregular warfare, focusing on counter-terrorism and sniping. It was during his service that he developed his passion for knife making, producing knives for his colleagues from the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne). After his retirement, he used his extensive military experience and passion for knife manufacturing to found Spartan Blades, a company that produces high-quality tactical knives valued by professionals and collectors alike.
Mark Carey, co-founder of Spartan Blades, is a retired non-commissioned officer of the United States Army Special Forces with over 21 years of military experience. He began his service in the infantry in Ulm, Germany, and then served as a mechanic for mechanized units at Fort Knox in Kentucky. After completing his training as a Special Forces medic, he specialized in medicine, irregular warfare, counter-terrorism, and sniping. After his military career, he worked as Director of Foreign Operations in Kuwait, where he managed multi-million dollar contracts. In 2008, he founded Spartan Blades together with Curtis Iovito, a company that produces tactical knives that combine military precision with artisan perfection.
Spartan Blades - In 2008, in a historic barn in Aberdeen, North Carolina, two retired non-commissioned officers of the United States Army Special Forces, Curtis Iovito and Mark Carey, combined more than 40 years of military experience to found Spartan Blades, a company specializing in the production of high-quality knives for both military and civilian use. Each knife, reflecting their constant pursuit of perfection, is carefully designed and made from the finest materials, such as CPM MagnaCut steel and titanium. Thanks to its collaboration with renowned designers, including William W. Harsey, Jr., Spartan Blades has won numerous industry awards, including the prestigious title of “American Made Knife of the Year” for the Spartan-Harsey Folder model in 2016. In 2019, as a result of the merger with KA-BAR Knives, Spartan Blades expanded its production capabilities, introducing three product lines: Gold, Silver and Bronze, tailored to the diverse needs of customers. Today, Spartan Blades remains synonymous with excellence in the world of knives, combining military precision with the highest craftsmanship.
AUS-8A - Japanese stainless steel valued for its excellent balance between durability and ease of sharpening. Manufactured by Aichi Steel, it is characterized by a refined chemical composition, ensuring reliability and durability. The high chromium content makes it corrosion-resistant, while the precisely balanced proportions of molybdenum and vanadium increase hardness and abrasion resistance. The addition of silicon improves resistance to mechanical stress, which translates into the durability of the cutting edge. The hardening properties of this steel enable an optimal balance between the flexibility and rigidity of the blade. Due to its reliability, it is used in both everyday knives and tools intended for intensive use. Often compared to American 440 series steels, it offers similar strength parameters. The popularity of this alloy is due to its durability, high quality and favorable price, which makes it the choice of many professionals and knife enthusiasts.
Blade - Drop Point type, covered with black powder coating. The thickness of the blade ensures high durability, while the low flat grind gives excellent cutting edge geometry and extreme cutting performance. To facilitate control of the blade, part of the back of the blade is covered with upper jimping, a corrugated thumb rest.
Handle - a series of holes in the handle reduces weight and improves grip. They also allow a paracord braid to be attached to the knife. The contoured shape and jimping on the top and bottom of the handle ensures a comfortable, secure grip even with wet hands. Forefinger groove on the front for better control.
Sheath: plastic, extendable, protects the blade and part of the handle. Thumb lever for quick drawing. Multiple holes on the edge for individual carrying options.
Accessories: tin spartan helmet pendant on paracord.
