14C28N - martensitic stainless chrome steel is the latest achievement in the range of knife steels produced by the Swedish steelworks Sandvik. The optimized chemical composition with a unique combination ensures the highest quality, excellent edge performance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. By reducing the carbon content to 0.62% (C) and increasing the chromium content to 14.0% (Cr), as well as adding nitrogen 0.11% (N), corrosion resistance has been significantly increased. Vacuum & Cryogenic - 14C28N steel has undergone a specialized heat treatment process involving two key stages. Vacuum Heat Treatment - the steel is heated in a vacuum environment, which minimizes oxidation and ensures more uniform metal properties. This process increases the strength and structural integrity of the steel. Cryogenic Treatment: after heating, the steel is rapidly cooled to extremely low temperatures, often below -100°C (-148°F). This transformation converts residual austenite into martensite, significantly increasing hardness, wear resistance, and overall durability. Thanks to these advanced processes, 14C28N steel delivers exceptional performance, offering both razor-sharp edge retention and remarkable blade durability.
Crossbar Lock - a crossbar that moves horizontally in longitudinal slots in the steel side plates of the Handle frame. When the knife is opened, the locking bar engages the rear of the blade from above, preventing it from moving back. The bar is held in place by two springs. Unlocking occurs when the locking bar is pulled back, the ends of which are accessible through cutouts in the grips on the sides of the handle. In the closed position, the bar presses against the cam surface at the rear of the blade, preventing it from opening on its own. The advantages of the Crossbar Lock are its resistance to contamination, practical insensitivity to dynamic loads, ease of use with both the right and left hand, and lightness of operation.
Blade - Clip Point type, finished with a Blackwashed method that masks scratches and prevents glare. The long cutting edge, relative to the blade length, tapers toward the needle-sharp tip of the knife. The blade thickness ensures high strength, while the high, flat grind provides excellent cutting edge geometry and extreme cutting performance. Ceramic ball bearings ensure smooth and seamless operation of the knife’s opening mechanism. A double-sided thumb stud on the blade allows for quick and effortless opening by both right- and left-handed users. On the blade spine, upper jimping provides a textured thumb rest. A small choil facilitates sharpening. The whole is locked with an intuitive Crossbar Lock.
Blackwashed - a blade finishing method that combines two techniques. Black Coating - a black protective, non-reflective coating. Stonewashed - after applying the coating, the blade undergoes a process that gives it a slightly aged, satin-matte appearance and effectively masks minor scratches and marks caused during use. The end result is a unique, aged look with a matte, dark finish that is both stylish and practical. It is a more aesthetic variant of the classic black stonewashed.
Ultem™ - a material belonging to the Polyetherimide family, or simply PEI. This material is characterized primarily by high mechanical and impact strength with a very high strength-to-weight ratio. It also features high thermal resistance (180°C) and high chemical resistance to all types of solvents (synthetic and natural), lubricants, and other chemicals. Add to this its complete resistance to weather conditions, and we have the ideal material for knife handles.
Handle - two pieces of Ultem™ composite, a material that is extremely mechanically durable and virtually completely resistant to weather conditions and chemicals, textured for improved grip, screwed to the steel frame of the knife. The solid backspacer provides the desired rigidity and durability of the design. The simple, reliable construction ensures many years of use. The deep finger groove improves grip. The pivot is adorned with a stylized Kubey Knife logo.
