CPM 20CV – one of the best tool steels, a premium-grade American martensitic stainless steel. Manufactured by US Crucible Industries using the Crucible® Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process. The CPM process creates a highly homogeneous, high-quality steel characterized by excellent dimensional stability, grindability, and ductility compared to steels produced by conventional methods. Designed to provide better wear resistance while maintaining corrosion resistance at the highest level. This super steel is comparable to Bohler’s M390 or Carpenter’s CTS-204P. According to some knife manufacturers, 20CV is the best of these three steels in terms of edge retention. It consists of 1.9% carbon (C), 20.0% chromium (Cr), 4.0% vanadium (V), 1.0% molybdenum (Mo), and 0.6% tungsten (W). The high percentage of chromium with a touch of molybdenum makes 20CV one of the best high-grade corrosion-resistant steels.
Vacuum & Cryogenic - CPM 20CV steel undergoes a specialized heat treatment process comprising two key stages. Vacuum Heat Treatment involves hardening the steel in a vacuum environment, which minimizes oxidation and ensures more uniform metal properties. This process increases the steel’s strength and structural integrity. Cryogenic Treatment: after heating, the steel is rapidly cooled to extremely low temperatures, often below -100°C (-148°F). This transformation converts residual austenite into martensite, significantly increasing hardness, wear resistance, and overall durability. Thanks to these advanced processes, CPM 20CV steel delivers exceptional performance, offering both razor-sharp edge retention and remarkable blade durability.
DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) enhances the blade’s surface durability with a black, matte nanocomposite coating that exhibits unique properties such as exceptional hardness and low friction, as well as excellent corrosion resistance. It is one of the most scratch- and wear-resistant coatings used in industry, including the knife industry.
Blade—featuring a karambit profile, whose distinctly curved edge gives the cut a very aggressive, pulling action. This geometry works well for quickly cutting ropes, straps, belts, and fibrous materials, as the blade naturally maintains contact with the material being cut and effectively “pulls” it under the edge. In practice, this translates to high effectiveness where dynamics, movement control, and confident blade guidance matter. The flat grind used improves cutting efficiency and gives the curved blade a more practical character. Thickened at the tip, it reinforces this critical part of the knife.
