Microtech Exocet II Wharncliffe Black Aluminum, Apocalyptic Böhler M390MK by Tony Marfione (1156-10AP) is a compact OTF automatic knife that combines a straight-edged Wharncliffe blade, Böhler M390MK steel, and a wide clip that serves as both a pocket clip and a money clip. The enlarged Exocet II design offers a longer cutting edge than the first generation, while maintaining compact dimensions that are comfortable for everyday carry.
The D/A OTF mechanism extends and retracts the blade using the same slider. The reversible tip-down clip allows you to adjust the carrying orientation, and the clip’s wide surface holds folded bills securely. The aluminum body provides adequate rigidity while weighing just 87.88 g.
Böhler M390MK – a durable cutting edge in a compact automatic knife
The blade is made of Böhler M390MK steel with a hardness of 61–62 HRC. The material is characterized by high abrasion resistance, good corrosion resistance, and the ability to maintain its sharpness for a long time. It works well for opening packages, cutting tape, cardboard, and other everyday materials.
Wharncliffe, Plain Edge, and Apocalyptic
The Wharncliffe profile features an almost straight cutting edge and a sloping spine leading to a low-set tip. This geometry makes it easier to control the cut and work on flat surfaces. The Flat grind ensures smooth blade guidance, while the Apocalyptic finish gives the blade a practical, weathered look.
Black Aluminum and Money Clip
The handle is made of 6061-T6 aluminum in Black. The wide steel clip can be used both to secure the knife in a pocket and to hold banknotes. The right/left, tip-down configuration allows you to adjust how you carry it to suit your preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for and sharpen Böhler M390MK steel?
After use, clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. For sharpening, it is best to use diamond stones, CBN systems, or a precision guide system that makes it easier to maintain a consistent angle.
What are the advantages of the Wharncliffe profile?
The Wharncliffe profile features an almost straight cutting edge and a low-set tip. It makes it easier to control cutting depth, open packages, and work with materials on a flat surface.
How does the D/A OTF mechanism work?
The D/A OTF mechanism extends and retracts the blade using the same slider. Sliding the slider forward automatically opens the knife, and sliding it in the opposite direction retracts the blade into the Handle.
What is the money clip used for?
The wide clip allows you to secure the knife in your pocket and can also be used to hold folded bills. It can be moved to either the right or left side of the handle.
How do you maintain the OTF mechanism?
The interior of the body should be protected from sand, dust, and excess thick grease. For periodic maintenance, apply a small amount of a light lubricant designed for OTF mechanisms, then extend and retract the blade several times.
