The Microtech Combat Troodon Gen III S/E Tan Aluminum, Black M390MK OTF automatic knife by Tony Marfione (1143-1TA) is a full-size OTF Double Action automatic knife featuring a single-beveled Drop Point blade made of Böhler M390MK steel and a 6061-T6 aluminum handle. The black blade contrasts with the sand-colored body, and the deep milling on the handle enhances grip and control during use.
A side slide allows for automatic deployment and retraction of the blade, while the Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ mechanism ensures consistent operation in both directions. The Crud Kutter™ system helps reduce debris buildup, and the adjustable titanium clip with a ceramic ball allows the knife to be carried tip-down on either the right or left side of the Handle.
Böhler M390MK and flat grind
The blade is made of Böhler M390MK stainless steel, developed specifically for Microtech knives. The material offers high corrosion resistance, good edge retention, and properties suitable for a heavily used OTF automatic knife. The Flat grind promotes effective and controlled cutting.
Drop Point, Single Edge, and Black Finish
The Drop Point profile features a gently sloping spine, a sturdy tip, and a functional cutting edge. The single, smooth Plain Edge is ideal for precise cutting and is easier to sharpen regularly than partially serrated geometries. The black finish gives the blade a subdued, technical look.
Tan Aluminum and Gen III Mechanism
The handle is made of 6061-T6 aluminum in Tan. Deep grooves and milling increase the number of contact points with the hand, improving control of the full-size design. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ enables automatic blade extension and retraction, while the Crud Kutter™ helps direct debris away from critical mechanism components. Standard Torx screws facilitate proper maintenance, and the integrated glass breaker expands the knife’s emergency functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for Böhler M390MK steel?
After use, clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. Despite its high corrosion resistance, do not allow moisture, salt, or corrosive substances to remain on it. Before long-term storage, you can apply a thin layer of preservative.
How do you sharpen a Drop Point blade?
Sharpen the edge at a constant angle, guiding the tool along the curve of the blade. Near the tip, reduce pressure to preserve the factory geometry and avoid rounding off the tip.
How does the Double Action OTF mechanism work?
Sliding the slide forward automatically extends the blade, while sliding it in the opposite direction retracts it. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ mechanism is responsible for the drive’s operation in both directions.
How do you clean a knife with the Crud Kutter™ system?
Crud Kutter™ helps reduce debris buildup, but it does not eliminate the need for maintenance. Protect the knife from sand, fibers, and excess lubricant. Use a small amount of a product designed for OTF knives on the mechanism.
How do I safely store an OTF knife?
The knife should be stored with the blade fully retracted, out of reach of unauthorized persons. Before putting it away, check that the slide mechanism is functioning properly and that the blade channel is free of debris that could interfere with the mechanism’s operation.
