The Microtech Combat Troodon Gen III T/E Red Aluminum, Apocalyptic M390MK by Tony Marfione OTF automatic knife (1144-10APRD) is a full-size OTF Double Action automatic knife featuring a Tanto blade made of Böhler M390MK steel and a red 6061-T6 aluminum handle. The Apocalyptic finish gives the blade a rugged, utilitarian look, while the deeply milled body enhances grip and control.
A side slide allows for automatic deployment and retraction of the blade. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ mechanism ensures consistent operation in both directions, and a debris-clearing feature helps maintain the mechanism’s performance during regular use. A reversible titanium clip with a ceramic ball allows the knife to be carried tip-down on either the right or left side of the Handle.
Böhler M390MK and flat grind
The blade is made of Böhler M390MK stainless steel, developed specifically for Microtech knives. The material offers high corrosion resistance, good edge retention, and properties suitable for a heavily used OTF automatic knife. The Flat grind promotes effective and controlled cutting.
Tanto, Plain Edge, and Apocalyptic
The Tanto profile features a clearly defined transition between the main cutting edge and the tip of the blade. This geometry ensures a strong tip and good support during precision work. The smooth Plain Edge facilitates controlled cutting, while the Apocalyptic finish helps minimize the appearance of minor signs of wear.
Red Aluminum and Gen III Mechanism
The handle is made of 6061-T6 aluminum with a red finish. Deep milling increases the number of contact points with the hand, improving grip and control of the full-size design. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ supports automatic blade extension and retraction, standard Torx screws facilitate proper maintenance, and the integrated bottle opener expands the knife’s emergency functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for Böhler M390MK steel?
After use, clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. Despite its high corrosion resistance, do not allow moisture, salt, or corrosive substances to remain on it. Before long-term storage, you can apply a thin layer of preservative.
How to sharpen a Tanto blade?
Each section of the edge should be sharpened separately, maintaining a distinct transition between the main and front parts of the blade. Do not guide the tool in a single rounded motion through the break point, as this may alter the geometry of the profile.
How does the Double Action OTF mechanism work?
Sliding the slide forward automatically extends the blade, while sliding it in the opposite direction retracts it. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ mechanism is responsible for the drive’s operation in both directions.
How do you clean the OTF mechanism?
Protect the knife from sand, lint, and excess lubricant. Clean the blade channel and the area around the slide regularly, and use compressed air and a small amount of a cleaner designed for OTF knives on the mechanism.
How do you safely store an OTF knife?
The knife should be stored with the blade fully retracted, out of reach of unauthorized persons. Before putting it away, check that the slide mechanism is functioning properly and that the blade channel is free of debris.
