The Microtech Ultratech Gen III ZBP 1121-10AP is an OTF automatic knife featuring a Drop Point blade made of Böhler M390MK steel and a black aluminum handle. The Apocalyptic finish gives the blade a rugged, intentionally weathered look, while the ZBP mechanism reduces blade play after deployment.
The Double Action OTF mechanism allows the blade to be automatically extended and retracted using a slide. Generation III utilizes the Dual-Fuel Drive Train system and the Crud Kutter feature, which support smooth operation of the mechanism and minimize the impact of fine debris.
Böhler M390MK – steel developed for Microtech
The blade is made of Böhler M390MK steel, a special grade of M390 developed for Microtech in collaboration with Böhler. The material offers high resistance to corrosion and abrasion, as well as excellent edge retention.
Drop Point, flat grind, and Apocalyptic finish
The Drop Point profile provides a functional tip and versatile geometry for everyday use. The flat grind promotes efficient cutting, while the Apocalyptic finish gives the surface a distinctive, aged look.
Black aluminum handle and ZBP
The handle is made of 6061-T6 aluminum in black. The body is a monolithic construction, so it does not use a classic backspacer as a separate component.
The ZBP – Zero Blade Play system was developed to reduce the blade play characteristic of many OTF designs after the blade is extended. The blade extends and retracts automatically via a slider, and the Dual-Fuel Drive Train and Crud Kutter systems support the mechanism’s reliable operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for Böhler M390MK steel?
After use, it’s a good idea to clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. M390MK is highly corrosion-resistant, but periodically applying a thin layer of protective coating helps keep the surface in good condition.
At what angle should the Ultratech Gen III ZBP be sharpened?
A good starting point is approximately 15–20° per side, ideally while maintaining the factory edge geometry. With M390MK, it’s best to use high-performance abrasives.
What does ZBP stand for?
ZBP – Zero Blade Play is a design solution developed to reduce blade play after deployment, a characteristic common to many OTF automatic knives.
How does the Double Action OTF mechanism work?
Pushing the slider forward automatically extends the blade, while pulling it back automatically retracts the blade into the handle. Both actions are performed by the same mechanism.
How do you maintain the Ultratech Gen III mechanism?
The interior of the mechanism should be protected from excessive dust, sand, and other fine debris. Regular cleaning and the use of products suitable for OTF mechanisms help maintain the slider’s smooth operation.
