Pietta 1863 Remington New Pocket Revolver, .31 caliber, manufactured by E. Remington & Sons. As one of the first revolvers to feature a solid frame (with the cylinder enclosed by a one-piece frame), it offered greater reliability than the Colt-style revolvers used during the same period. Another major advantage—and one of its key distinguishing features—was the ability to remove the entire cylinder in just a matter of seconds and replace it with a spare cylinder that had already been loaded.

The barrel was screwed into the frame and fitted with a half-round front sight. The cylinder was cylindrical, with rectangular notches for the cylinder stop. The loading lever was a pivoting design, similar to that found on classic Colt-style revolvers. The lever widened toward the rear, giving the firearm a more streamlined profile and helping prevent the loading lever from catching on the edge of a holster. The grip was fitted with walnut grip panels. Nickel-plated brass frame. Fixed brass front sight, with the rear sight formed as a groove along the top surface of the frame.

It is worth noting that reducing the size of the firearm also reduced the cylinder capacity. The pocket version has five chambers, whereas the full-size revolver has six. Its compact dimensions and pocket-carry capability contributed to the model’s popularity among saloon regulars, gamblers, and well-dressed urban gentlemen for whom openly parading in public with a holster attached to a belt was considered inappropriate. It should also be noted that this model does not feature a trigger guard, meaning that carrying a loaded revolver with the hammer cocked was rather risky for both the owner and those nearby.
