1858 Remington New Model Army Texas Nickel Martial .44 is a six-shot Remington percussion cap-and-ball black powder revolver in .44 caliber, featuring a shortened 3" snubnose barrel. It is front-loaded and built with a closed, nickel-plated brass frame.

This revolver features a closed-top frame, a one-piece frame design that surrounds the cylinder, making it more reliable than many revolvers of its era. The closed frame also provided greater structural rigidity and durability. Another advantage was the ability to quickly remove the entire cylinder and replace it with another one that was already loaded. Produced from 1863 to 1875, it was manufactured in two calibers: the .36 caliber New Model Navy version and the .44 caliber New Model Army version. It is estimated that approximately 122,000 examples of this model left the factory.

Constructionnickel-plated brass closed-top frame, 6-chamber cylinder, grip fittings, hammer, and a 3" octagonal snubnose barrel, with a 1:30" rifling twist. Sights include a fixed front sight. The trigger guard is made of polished brass.

Grip panels - made from natural walnut wood, designed to provide a secure and confident hold. Oil finishing enhances the wood’s color, accentuates the grain, and preserves its natural appearance. The oil penetrates deep into the wood without clogging the pores, allowing the wood to breathe.

Trigger - the hammer-cocking mechanism allows two positions: half-cock for placing percussion caps on the nipples, and full-cock for firing.

Cylinder pin latch - due to the shortened barrel, the revolver does not include a loading lever, which normally secures the cylinder pin. Instead, the cylinder pin is locked in place by a convenient latch, enabling even faster and easier cylinder replacement.

The Remington Model 1858 was the favorite firearm of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody. An example belonging to Will can be seen at the Remington Arms Company headquarters, accompanied by his handwritten note stating: “I carried and used this old Remington revolver for many years in Indian wars and for killing buffalo. It never failed me.” It is worth noting that Buffalo Bill was so attached to his revolver that he continued using it even after more modern cartridge revolvers had appeared. This loyalty can be attributed to the revolver’s excellent accuracy and impressive stopping power. Projectiles fired from the Remington 1858 were capable—depending on the amount and quality of the powder used—of achieving substantial muzzle velocities, ranging from 168 to 393 meters per second and beyond. For comparison, the muzzle velocity of a projectile fired from a P-64 pistol is 305 meters per second.
