The Spyderco Sage 5 Salt C123GPBKMCBK is a compact folding knife designed by Sal Glesser, intended for everyday use even in humid environments. The model features a Crucible CPM MagnaCut steel blade, a black G10 handle, and a convenient Compression Lock® on both sides.
The blade can be opened via the Thumb Hole, and the deep-carry wire clip allows the knife to be carried on the right or left side in a tip-up configuration. Skeletonized steel liners, an open spine, and hardware with enhanced corrosion resistance reflect the practical nature of the Salt® series.
Crucible CPM MagnaCut – steel with high corrosion resistance
The blade is made of Crucible CPM MagnaCut steel with a hardness of 60–62 HRC. This is a stainless powder steel valued for its high corrosion resistance, good toughness, and cutting edge stability. These properties align well with the design philosophy of the Salt® series, which is intended for use near water and in high-humidity conditions.
Leaf-Shaped, Full Flat Grind, and Black TiCN
The Leaf-Shaped profile provides a functional tip and a versatile cutting edge. Full flat grind facilitates smooth blade glide through material, while the non-reflective Black TiCN coating gives the blade a uniform, technical look.
Black G10, Compression Lock®, and Salt® Construction
The handle is made of black G10, providing a rigid and durable grip surface. Skeletonized steel liners reinforce the construction, and the open back facilitates cleaning the knife after contact with water, sand, or dirt. The Compression Lock® stabilizes the blade when open and is operated from the back of the Handle.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for and sharpen Crucible CPM MagnaCut steel?
After use, clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. After contact with seawater, rinse the knife with fresh water, dry it, and periodically lubricate the mechanism. Diamond stones, high-quality ceramic, or a sharpening guide work well for sharpening the MagnaCut.
How does the Compression Lock® work?
The Compression Lock® uses a spring-loaded locking mechanism located near the spine of the Handle. Once opened, it stabilizes the blade, and releasing the mechanism does not require placing your fingers in the path of the folding blade.
What sets the Spyderco Salt® series apart?
The Salt® series uses materials selected for enhanced corrosion resistance. The model performs well in humid environments, but still requires basic cleaning, drying, and periodic maintenance.
What is the benefit of an open-back handle?
The open-back design makes it easier to remove dirt, sand, and moisture from inside the handle. It also allows you to clean the knife more quickly without having to fully disassemble it.
What does a tip-up clip mean?
The tip-up configuration means that when the knife is closed, the tip of the blade points upward. On this model, the clip can be moved to either the right or left side of the Handle.
