The Microtech Ultratech Gen III EX-ZBP Bayonet Signature Black Aluminum OTF automatic knife, Apocalyptic M390MK by Tony Marfione (1120EX-10APS) is a Double Action OTF automatic knife featuring a double-edged Bayonet blade, Böhler M390MK steel, and a milled 6061-T6 aluminum Handle. The Signature Series variant combines the Apocalyptic finish with the Zero Blade Play system and a third-generation mechanism.
A side slide allows for automatic deployment and retraction of the blade, while the Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ ensures consistent operation in both directions. The Crud Kutter™ helps reduce debris buildup, and the adjustable titanium clip with a roller allows for tip-down carry on either the right or left side of the Handle.
Böhler M390MK and Flat Grind
The blade is made of Böhler M390MK stainless steel, developed specifically for Microtech designs. The material offers high corrosion resistance, good edge retention, and properties suitable for a premium automatic knife. The Flat grind promotes effective cutting and stable geometry on both edges.
Bayonet, Double Edge, and Apocalyptic
The Bayonet profile features a centrally positioned tip and two smooth Plain Edge cutting edges. The double-edged geometry gives the blade a symmetrical, technical character, while the Apocalyptic finish creates a rugged working surface and helps minimize the visibility of minor wear marks.
EX-ZBP and Gen III Mechanism
The black handle is made of 6061-T6 aluminum and finished with EX Machined milling. The Zero Blade Play system limits the movement of the extended blade, improving its stability. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ enables automatic blade extension and retraction, while the Crud Kutter™ helps direct debris away from critical mechanism parts. Standard Torx screws facilitate proper maintenance, and the integrated glass breaker enhances the tool’s emergency functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for Böhler M390MK steel?
After use, clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. Despite its high corrosion resistance, do not allow moisture, salt, or corrosive substances to remain on it. Before long-term storage, you can apply a thin layer of preservative.
How to sharpen a double-edged Bayonet blade?
Sharpen each edge separately, maintaining a consistent angle and symmetry on both sides. Near the centrally positioned tip, reduce the pressure to avoid rounding the tip or altering the profile’s geometry.
How does the Zero Blade Play system work?
The Zero Blade Play system limits blade movement once it is fully extended. This solution improves blade stability in the open position while maintaining the automatic operation of the Double Action OTF mechanism.
How do you clean a mechanism with the Crud Kutter™ system?
Crud Kutter™ helps reduce debris buildup, but it does not eliminate the need for maintenance. Protect the knife from sand, lint, and excess lubricant. Use a small amount of a lubricant designed for OTF knives on the mechanism.
How do I care for the Apocalyptic finish?
Clean the blade with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Do not use polishing compounds or abrasive materials that could alter the surface’s distinctive, raw texture.
