The Microtech Ultratech Gen IV T/E Red Abrasion Aluminum, Red Abrasion M390MK OTF automatic knife by Tony Marfione (11234HT-1RDAA) is a full-size OTF Double Action automatic knife featuring a Tanto blade made of Böhler M390MK steel and a 6061-T6 aluminum handle. The Red Abrasion finish applied to the blade and body gives the design a uniform, distinctive character, while the partial Half Tri-Grip milling enhances grip control.
Sliding the side slide automatically extends or retracts the blade. The Generation IV mechanism incorporates Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ and Crud Kutter™ technologies, and the adjustable titanium clip with a ceramic ball allows for tip-down carry on either the right or left side of the handle.
Böhler M390MK and flat grind
The blade is made of Böhler M390MK stainless steel, developed specifically for Microtech knives. The material provides high corrosion resistance, good edge retention, and properties suitable for a heavily used automatic knife. The Flat grind promotes effective and controlled cutting.
Tanto, Plain Edge, and Red Abrasion
The Tanto profile features a distinct transition between the main cutting edge and the tip of the blade. This geometry ensures a strong tip and good support during precision work. The smooth Plain Edge facilitates controlled cutting, while the Red Abrasion finish gives the blade its distinctive look.
Half Tri-Grip and Gen IV Mechanism
The handle is made of 6061-T6 aluminum and finished in the Red Abrasion variant. The Half Tri-Grip milling increases the number of contact points with the hand, enhancing grip and control. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ is responsible for extending and retracting the blade, while the Crud Kutter™ helps reduce debris buildup around key mechanism components. Standard Torx screws facilitate proper maintenance, and the integrated glass breaker expands the knife’s emergency functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for Böhler M390MK steel?
After use, clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. Despite its high corrosion resistance, do not allow moisture, salt, or corrosive substances to remain on it. Before long-term storage, you can apply a thin layer of preservative.
How to sharpen a Tanto blade?
Each section of the edge should be sharpened separately, maintaining a distinct transition between the main and front parts of the blade. Do not guide the tool in a single rounded motion through the break point, as this may alter the geometry of the profile.
How does the Double Action OTF mechanism work?
Sliding the slide forward automatically extends the blade, while sliding it in the opposite direction retracts it. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ mechanism ensures consistent operation in both directions.
How do you clean the Crud Kutter™ system?
Crud Kutter™ helps reduce debris buildup, but it is not a substitute for regular maintenance. Protect the knife from sand, fibers, and excess oil. Use only a small amount of a cleaner designed for OTF knives on the mechanism.
How do I care for the Red Abrasion finish?
Clean the surfaces with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Do not use polishing compounds or abrasive materials that could alter the distinctive appearance of the blade and handle.
