The Microtech Scarab II Gen III T/E Black Aluminum, Stonewashed M390MK OTF automatic knife by Tony Marfione (1279-10) is a full-size OTF Double Action automatic knife featuring a Tanto blade made of Böhler M390MK steel and a contoured handle crafted from 6061-T6 aluminum. The Stonewashed finish gives the blade a subdued, utilitarian look, while the textured inlays enhance grip stability when handling the large blade.
A side slide allows for automatic deployment and retraction of the blade. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ mechanism powers the drive in both directions, the Crud Kutter™ system helps minimize the impact of fibers and fine debris, and rear ports support the mechanism’s reliability during use in demanding conditions.
Böhler M390MK and flat grind
The blade is made of Böhler M390MK stainless steel, developed specifically for Microtech knives. The material offers high corrosion resistance, good edge retention, and properties suitable for a heavily used OTF automatic knife. The Flat grind supports effective and controlled cutting.
Tanto, Plain Edge, and Stonewashed
The Tanto profile features a clearly defined transition between the main and front sections of the edge. This geometry ensures a strong tip and good blade support during precision work. The smooth Plain Edge facilitates controlled cutting, while the Stonewashed finish helps minimize the appearance of fine scratches and scuffs.
Black Aluminum and Gen III Mechanism
The contoured handle is made of 6061-T6 aluminum in Black. Textured inlays increase the number of contact points with the hand, improving grip and control. Dual-Fuel Drive Train™, Crud Kutter™, and rear ports support the mechanism’s operation, while Torx screws and an integrated glass breaker round out the Scarab II Gen III’s functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for Böhler M390MK steel?
After use, clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. Despite its high corrosion resistance, do not allow moisture, salt, or corrosive substances to remain on it. Before long-term storage, you can apply a thin layer of preservative.
How to sharpen a Tanto blade?
Each section of the edge should be sharpened separately, maintaining a distinct transition between the main and front parts of the blade. Do not guide the tool in a single rounded motion across the break point, as this may alter the factory-set geometry of the profile.
How does the Double Action OTF mechanism work?
Pushing the slide forward automatically extends the blade, while pulling it back retracts the blade. The Dual-Fuel Drive Train™ powers the mechanism in both directions.
How do you clean the Scarab II Gen III mechanism?
Protect the knife from sand, lint, and excess lubricant. Clean the blade channel, the area around the slide, and the rear ports regularly, using only a small amount of a lubricant designed for OTF mechanisms.
How do you safely store an OTF knife?
Store the knife with the blade fully retracted, out of reach of unauthorized persons. Before putting it away, check that the slide mechanism is functioning properly and ensure that the blade channel is free of debris.
