Microtech Halo VII Marfione Select Black Hard Anodized Aluminum OTF Knife, Stonewashed M390MK by Tony Marfione (1350-10MS1)

Microtech Halo VII Marfione Select 1350-10MS1 represents a modern evolution of one of the most iconic OTF designs in Microtech history. Designed by Tony Marfione, it combines the unmistakable DNA of the Halo series with contemporary materials, precision craftsmanship and a distinctly technical aesthetic. The Halo VII Marfione Select is created for discerning users and collectors who appreciate distinctive mechanical engineering, exceptional fit and finish, and one of the most recognizable designs ever produced by Microtech Knives.

At the heart of the Halo VII is its signature S/A (Single-Action) OTF mechanism, in which spring energy is dedicated exclusively to blade deployment. Pressing the activation button releases the mechanism, driving the blade rapidly from the handle and locking it securely in the open position. The result is exceptionally fast and decisive deployment, completed in less than a second. Unlike D/A (Double-Action) OTF mechanisms, the S/A system does not retract the blade automatically. After use, the blade must be manually retracted while re-cocking the spring by means of the charging handle located at the rear of the knife. This resets the mechanism and prepares it for the next automatic deployment. One of the defining strengths of the Single-Action OTF platform is its comparatively simple and robust mechanical architecture. Fewer components are involved in blade movement, supporting durability and reliability while allowing the use of a powerful spring system that delivers fast, authoritative blade deployment. This direct, uncompromising operating principle has become one of the signature characteristics of the Halo series and makes the Halo VII a standout among large, heavy-duty automatic OTF knives.

Böhler M390MK – premium-grade steel developed for Microtech

The blade is made of Böhler M390MK steel, a special grade of M390 developed for Microtech in collaboration with Böhler. The material offers high resistance to corrosion and abrasion, as well as excellent edge retention. In the large HALO VII blade, these properties complement a design focused on both high cutting efficiency and edge durability during regular use.

The Marfione Select variant emphasizes the model’s exclusive character not through ornamentation for its own sake, but through the careful selection of materials, surface treatment, and attention to detail. At the same time, the HALO VII remains a distinctly mechanical and direct design—its character stems primarily from its functionality, proportions, and massive blade.

Clip Point, flat grind, and stonewashed finish

The Clip Point profile features a distinctly defined tip and a long cutting edge, which complements the slender proportions of the HALO VII blade well. The flat grind ensures versatile functionality, while the stonewashed finish gives the surface a subdued, slightly raw appearance.

With a blade length of 111.51 mm, the HALO VII clearly goes beyond the compact OTF format. Its slender silhouette and long cutting edge emphasize the character of a design that, from the very beginning of the HALO series, was conceived differently from typical double-action automatic knives.

Hard-Anodized Aluminum and Classic Single-Action Mechanism

The handle is made of aluminum coated with black, hard anodization. Hard anodization increases the aluminum’s surface durability and gives the body a uniform, technical appearance. The closed-frame design of the handle also serves as the rear portion of the frame, which is why the backspacer material and finish match those of the handle in the technical data.

The mechanism’s operation is characteristic of the HALO family. Pressing the button releases the tensioned spring assembly and causes the blade to extend automatically. To retract it, the user manually reloads the mechanism by pulling the blade back into the Handle while simultaneously re-tensioning the spring. Only after performing this action is the knife ready for the next automatic opening.

It is precisely this mode of operation that constitutes one of the most significant differences between the HALO VII and typical modern Microtech OTFs. In Double Action mechanisms, the same slide is responsible for both extending and retracting the blade. The HALO VII remains true to the Single Action concept—it automates only the opening motion, while retaining manual reloading as an integral part of its operation.

The HALO VII builds on the classic concept of earlier generations without altering its fundamental design. The large blade, Single Action mechanism, and distinctive manual spring re-tensioning method remain the most important features, while the Marfione Select edition gives this design a more exclusive finish and collector’s appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Single Action mechanism work in the Microtech HALO VII?

When the button is pressed, a coiled spring automatically extends the blade from the Handle. The mechanism does not retract the blade automatically—after use, the blade must be manually retracted while simultaneously re-tensioning the spring mechanism.

How does Single Action differ from Double Action OTF?

In the Double Action mechanism, moving the control lever allows both the automatic extension and retraction of the blade. Single Action automates only the opening; closing the blade and re-tensioning the spring are performed manually.

How do you care for Böhler M390MK steel?

After use, it’s a good idea to clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. M390MK has high corrosion resistance, but regular care helps keep both the cutting edge and the stonewashed finish in good condition.

How do you sharpen an M390MK Clip Point blade?

It’s best to preserve the factory edge geometry and guide the abrasive along its natural contour. Due to the M390MK’s high resistance to abrasion, high-performance abrasives—especially diamond ones—work well.

How do I care for the HALO VII mechanism?

It is important to protect the interior of the mechanism from sand, dust, and excess lubricant. The area around the trigger and the components responsible for manual reloading should be kept clean to ensure smooth and consistent operation of the Single Action mechanism.
