Warning and Safety Information for the KnifeMore

This product is intended for use only by adults with knowledge and experience in handling sharp cutting tools. Improper use of the knife can result in serious injuries. The blade is extremely sharp and can easily cut through skin and tissue; therefore, extra caution should always be exercised while cutting, and hands should be kept away from the cutting edge. To prevent the knife from slipping, it is recommended to cut on a stable, non-slip surface and avoid excessive force, which may cause uncontrolled blade movement.

Leaving the knife on the edge of a table, countertop, or in easily accessible places—especially where children are present—poses a significant safety risk. The knife should always be properly secured after use, ideally by placing it on a stable surface or storing it in designated knife blocks, protective sheaths, or magnetic strips. The knife should never be used for tasks it is not designed for, such as opening cans or prying objects, as this can damage the tool and lead to dangerous accidents.

A dull blade increases the risk of injury, as it requires more force and is more likely to slip from the material being cut. Therefore, it is essential to sharpen the knife regularly to maintain optimal sharpness. Additionally, proper cleaning and drying of the knife are necessary to prevent corrosion and bacterial growth. Periodic inspection of the handle and blade is recommended to check for cracks, chips, or looseness. If any damage is detected, the knife should be repaired or replaced immediately.

When using the knife, focus solely on the task at hand—avoid talking on the phone, watching television, or other distractions while cutting. Ensure proper lighting in the workspace for better visibility and control. Please note that some countries or regions have laws restricting the ownership and carrying of knives. Before purchasing or using this knife, verify that its use is legal in your location according to applicable regulations.

Following these safety guidelines will help ensure safe and effective knife use, minimizing the risk of accidents and extending the lifespan of the tool.

Glock FM 81 Survival Knife with Saw – more capability in the same legendary design

Original Glock FM 81 Survival Knife Black (12183) is a full-size fixed-blade survival and field knife with a saw on the spine of the blade. It is an evolution of the classic Glock FM 78, retaining its simple, lightweight, and durable construction while adding an extra function that significantly expands the knife’s capabilities in the field.

Glock states that its outdoor equipment has been developed and tested according to military requirements and is used by military units worldwide. The FM 81 features hardened spring steel with a hardness of approximately 55 HRC, a protective electrophoretic coating, a polymer handle, and a dedicated polymer sheath.

It is designed for users who expect not decorative extras, but simplicity, durability, low weight, and maximum functionality in the field.

Glock FM 81 or FM 78? The saw makes a major difference

The most important difference between the Glock FM 78 and FM 81 is the robust saw positioned on the spine of the blade. Glock itself presents the FM 81 as an evolution of the FM 78 with this additional feature.

In practice, this means that the FM 81 retains a full-size cutting edge for standard knife tasks while also providing a second working surface for jobs where the smooth spine of the FM 78 offers no additional capability.

This makes the FM 81 a considerably more versatile choice for survival, bushcraft, camping, and emergency equipment. The saw can be used for making notches and working on smaller pieces of wood or synthetic materials. It will not replace a full-size folding saw, but it adds extra functionality without requiring another separate tool in your basic field kit.

The FM 78 is an excellent field knife. The FM 81 does the same job while giving the user one more useful capability.

Saw on the spine – added functionality without sacrificing the main cutting edge

One of the key advantages of the FM 81 is the placement of the saw on the spine of the blade. This means the primary cutting edge remains fully available for slicing, carving, and standard utility work.

It is therefore not a compromise where part of the main edge is replaced by serrations. The user gets:

  • a full Plain Edge for standard cutting tasks,
  • an additional saw on the spine,
  • one compact construction with no additional mechanisms,
  • increased functionality without a significant increase in overall size.

That is why, if the knife is intended for a survival backpack, vehicle emergency kit, outdoor equipment, or field gear, the FM 81 is a more versatile choice than the basic FM 78.

165 mm blade and as much as 5 mm thickness

The Glock FM 81 features a full-size blade measuring 165 mm in length and approximately 5 mm in thickness. These proportions provide high structural rigidity while maintaining a surprisingly low overall weight.

According to the manufacturer, the FM 81 weighs approximately 202 g. For comparison, the simpler FM 78 weighs around 206 g. This means that choosing the version with the saw does not result in a heavier or more cumbersome tool — the FM 81 maintains an excellent balance of size, strength, functionality, and weight.

165 mm blade. 5 mm of steel. Saw. Only around 202 g.

This is one of the strongest arguments in favor of the Glock FM 81.

Hardened spring steel – designed for real work

The blade is made of hardened spring steel with a hardness of approximately 55 HRC. Rather than pushing hardness to levels typical of some collector knives, Glock focuses on characteristics better suited to a practical field tool.

The steel is protected with an electrophoretic coating, which provides an additional barrier for the blade surface.

This is a knife designed primarily to be used, not to impress with laboratory specifications on paper.

Polymer handle – Glock experience in practice

For decades, Glock has been associated with the industrial use of durable polymers, and the same philosophy can be seen in the FM 81.

The simple polymer handle is resistant to field conditions, easy to clean, and does not require the maintenance associated with wood or other natural materials.

A large guard improves grip safety by separating the hand from the cutting edge. The construction retains the characteristic simplicity of Glock knives — few components and few parts that can loosen or require maintenance.

Original Glock sheath – an integral part of the set

The FM 81 comes with an original Glock polymer sheath, specifically designed for this knife.

The polymer sheath does not absorb moisture, is easy to clean, and suits the character of a knife intended for intensive field use.

This is an important advantage over many inexpensive survival knives where the sheath is often treated as the cheapest possible accessory. Here, the knife and its carrying system form one purpose-designed set.

Glock FM 81 – more than the FM 78 without a weight penalty

If your priority is the simplest possible construction with a smooth blade spine, the Glock FM 78 remains an excellent choice.

If, however, the knife is intended to serve as a survival tool, the FM 81 offers a stronger argument: it provides all the basic advantages of the same design plus an additional saw, while according to Glock’s specifications it is even slightly lighter — 202 g compared with 206 g for the FM 78.

This does not mean that the saw automatically makes the FM 81 the better knife for every application. It does, however, make it a more functional and versatile field tool.

When choosing a single knife for a backpack, survival kit, or emergency set, it is worth asking a simple question:

if you can have the proven Glock design with an additional saw and virtually no weight penalty, why give up that extra capability?

Original Glock FM 81 – more than just the look

The market includes inexpensive knives that visually resemble Glock designs. Similar appearance, however, does not mean identical specifications.

With the original Glock FM 81, the manufacturer clearly specifies the key parameters: spring steel, approximately 55 HRC, electrophoretic coating, polymer handle, saw on the spine, and a dedicated polymer sheath.

With an anonymous copy, similar styling does not automatically provide the same confidence regarding:

  • the type of steel used,
  • proper heat treatment,
  • actual blade hardness,
  • polymer quality,
  • geometry and quality of the saw,
  • fit of the knife in the sheath,
  • consistency between individual production units.

By choosing an original Glock, you are buying a product with defined specifications and verified origin, rather than merely an imitation of its distinctive form.

Glock FM 81 – why is it worth choosing?

  • original Glock Made in Austria
  • an evolution of the proven FM 78
  • additional robust saw on the blade spine
  • full cutting edge remains available for standard tasks
  • 165 mm blade length
  • approximately 5 mm blade thickness
  • hardened spring steel
  • hardness of approximately 55 HRC
  • protective electrophoretic coating
  • durable polymer handle
  • original Glock polymer sheath
  • weight of only approximately 202 g
  • greater versatility for survival and outdoor use than the FM 78
  • design developed as part of Glock equipment tested according to military requirements

Glock FM 81 – a survival knife with strong arguments

The FM 81 does not try to win with exotic steels, titanium components, or decorative machining. Its advantage is a simple and proven construction, a solid blade, low weight, and an additional saw positioned where it does not interfere with use of the main cutting edge.

That is why the original Glock FM 81 is an especially good choice for users who want one proven field knife rather than experimenting with anonymous substitutes. A cheap copy may look similar at first glance, but it does not offer the same confidence regarding steel quality, heat treatment, polymer quality, component fit, and overall durability.
