However, air rifles differ in how this air jet is generated. The simplest models are spring-powered air rifles, where the shooter must manually cock the piston spring before each shot. Releasing the spring moves the piston, compressing the air and propelling the pellet out of the barrel.

Pneumatic pistols and rifles, commonly known as air rifles, are primarily used for sport and recreation. In some countries, they are permitted for hunting; however, this is strictly prohibited in Poland. The most popular air rifle calibres are 4.5 mm (for sport and recreation), 5.5 mm, and 6.35 mm. According to Polish law, air rifles can be owned without a licence, provided the kinetic energy of the pellet does not exceed 17 J.
