Microtech Scarab II S/E Gen III OTF Knife Black Aluminum/3M, Apocalyptic M390MK by Tony Marfione (1278-10AP)
- Scarab 2 S/E Gen 3 Black Aluminum/3M, Apocalyptic sets a new standard for OTF technology. The dual blade deployment mechanism not only simplifies opening, but dual-spring design propels the blade forward with enough force for knife to open even underwater
Scarab II S/E Gen III Black Aluminum/3M, Apocalyptic it represents the pinnacle of excellence among tactical automatic knives, taking inspiration from the original Microtech Ultratech design. Built to withstand the toughest conditions, the new Scarab II is the best choice for intense use. Retaining the stylistic features of its predecessor, it sets a new benchmark for OTF (Out The Front) technology.
Externally it resembles the previous generation, but it's the internal design that really sets the new Scarab II apart. The dual revolutionary blade unfolding mechanism not only provides smoother operation for easier opening, but the dual spring design propels the blade forward with enough force to make the knife open even underwater. Precision engineered to the highest standards, the Scarab II guarantees unparalleled reliability and user safety.
M390MK - a collaboration between Microtech and Böhler engineers resulted in an exclusive version of M390 steel made only for Microtech. The carbon content has been increased and subjected to closer scrutiny thus improving the properties of M390 steel to provide better edge retention, corrosion resistance and polishing. Martensitic high-performance chromium steel produced by powder metallurgy. Due to its alloy concept, it has extremely high wear resistance and high corrosion resistance. Due to its high wear resistance, it adequately maintains the shape of the edge, so the blade stays sharp for a very long time (requiring minimal maintenance). Another of the advantages is resistance to the formation of “wire” during sharpening. The steel has a high chromium content of 19.0% (Cr) doped with 1.95% carbon (C), vanadium 4.0% (V), and is hardened between 59-61 HRC. This super steel is comparable to Carpenter's CPM 20CV or CTS-204P steels. Manufactured by Böhler Edelstahl in Kapfenberg, Austria.
Blade - machine-ground in a Drop Point S/E (Single Edge) style, sharpened on one side with a line of blade grooves on both sides. Finished with Apocalyptic patination. The blade was brought out with a high flat grind, providing excellent cutting properties. As a result, the knife has excellent piercing properties while maintaining its strength. The powerful mechanism of extending/retracting the blade with the help of the moled Thumb Slide, a stepped thumb slide, requires for safety the application of a specific force to overcome the resistance of the spring. In this model, the moleting has been upgraded to a version with a distinctive “X” in the center. The way of opening provides seamless opening for both right and left-handed people.
Handle - made with perfect precision in 3D technology on CNC milling machines, from 6061-T6 aluminum anodized in black Mil-Spec Hard Coat. Perfectly fitted inlays of special 3M Traction Tape material with sandpaper texture make the knife does not slip in the hand during use. There are notches (jimping) on the back and bottom of the Handle for a more secure grip. The slim profile and milled two-position (right/left) solid deep-carry clip allow the knife to be carried discreetly in the pocket, in tip-down (blade tip down) position. The clip features the line's signature scarab pictogram. The Handle is finished with a glass striker, a solid steel triangle, into which a tungsten carbide ball has been pressed. It also features a hole for interweaving a decorative line.
